Brussels, 13 December 2010 – In compliance with a European Resolution, tax-free shopping in airports ended in 1999. Today, this decision still confuses air-travellers, who are not aware that it is still possible to purchase products in Belgian airports at an advantageous price. According to a survey by research institute Alpha Marketing Research (commissioned by Belgian Sky Shops) 68% of airline travellers still don’t know that they can buy cheaper products when taking a plane. Thus, millions of passengers miss on great deals every year.

The European authorities banned tax-free shopping in airports in 1999. Since then, people travelling inside the European Union must pay the VAT (21% in Belgium) on all products purchased in Belgian airports. The owner of most of the airport’s shops reacted by reducing his prices by 21%, the amount of the VAT. The survey concludes that only a small minority of travellers are aware of this advantage. In 2009 alone, Brussels airport received 17 million travellers, and Charleroi 4 million. Ultimately, this means that millions of passengers have an incorrect perception of the pricing.

The survey

486 passengers were interviewed at Brussels airport within the framework of this survey. 28% never make a purchase at the airport. Only 33% were aware that the price of most products sold at the airport is advantageous. And even fewer travellers were conscious that this price advantage was also applicable for travel inside the European Union. Furthermore, only 19% of people interviewed knew that most of the prices in the airport are lower than in the city.

Tax-free prices

In 1999, a European Resolution banned the tax-free sale of products in airports for intra-European Union passengers. Belgian Sky Shop, which owns most of the shops in the Brussels and Charleroi airports, thus decided to modify its pricing policy in such a way that passengers travelling inside the European Union should not be penalised by this resolution. They managed to do this by adjusting most of their products’ prices in such a way that their clients could still benefit from the blatant advantage of tax-free prices. Prices for passengers travelling inside the European Union are identical than for those travelling outside Europe. Belgian Sky Shop’s pricing policy consists in deducting the tax on added value (in Belgium, this tax can be up to 21%) from the prices applicable in the city, for most of its products (see here a table summarising Belgian Sky Shop’s pricing policy for its main product categories).

Communication campaign

With the aim of tackling this confusion of passengers, Belgian Sky Shops launched an intensive communication campaign in the Brussels and Charleroi airports.

Nicolas Van Brandt, CEO of Belgian Sky Shops, explains: “the abolition of tax-free shopping proved a huge disappointment for many people travelling in Europe, which is understandable. We wanted travellers to benefit from advantageous prices at the airport. When you travel inside the European Union, you will pay the same price as you would if you were travelling outside Europe for most of the products on sale. Since the prices at the airport are much lower than in the city, every traveller may rest assured and be certain that making purchases at the airport makes good financial sense.

Mr Van Bradt further adds that very few people are aware that these same prices are also applicable for travellers coming back to Belgium. Upon their return, they can very well enjoy the same tax-free advantage.
